“Pianeta Dinamico” Project of INGV

Italy has, together with Iceland, the highest concentration of active volcanoes in Europe.

A series of geophysical measurement campaigns has recently concluded in the south-western sector of Vesuvius, within the “Tirone – Alto Vesuvio” reserve, aimed at identifying volcanic structures linked to the Plinian eruption of “Avellino” (which occurred about 4000 years ago). The activities carried out aim to identify and characterize, with a multidisciplinary approach, the sub-surface volcanic structures of this area in order to understand their geometry. The investigation methodologies used are geophysical (high resolution active seismic, both reflection and refraction, gravimetry, electrical resistivity, passive seismic, magnetometry and spontaneous potential) and geochemical (CO2 flux from the soil, CO2 concentration in the soil).

This study is a part of the INGV research project called “𝑷𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒕𝒂 𝑫𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒐”, The team of researchers ia from from 5 sections of INGV (Roma 1, Roma 2, National Earthquake Observatory, Palermo and Vesuvius Observatory), the University of Naples Federico II, the University of Siena (Centre for GeoTechnologies) and the University of Palermo.
