The recognition and study of the geological factors affecting the location, design, construction operation and maintenance of engineering works, and the study of the interaction between earth and human made structures, are the key areas of the engineering geology. Modern equipment and data acquisition systems are used to evaluate the physical and mechanical behaviour, to support engineering projects and activities. In particular, the staff of the soil and rock mechanics Laboratories is involved in the physical and mechanical characterisation of materials used for the groundwater protection from wastewater and in their installation optimisation. Moreover the staff of the laboratories are involved in services in the sector of ornamental and building materials.
