CGT hosts the practical activities of the Taxonomy School

From 29 June to 3 July 2026, the Centre for GeoTechnologies will host the integrated practical activities dedicated to the identification of vascular plants, fungi, bryophytes and lichens

From 29 June to 3 July 2026, the Centre for GeoTechnologies (CGT) of the University of Siena, located in San Giovanni Valdarno, will host the week of integrated practical activities of the Taxonomy School for the Identification of Vascular Plants, Algae, Fungi, Bryophytes and Lichens, promoted by the Italian Botanical Society (Società Botanica Italiana – SBI).

The initiative represents the final stage of a training programme designed for graduates, PhD candidates, PhD holders, research fellows and postdoctoral researchers working in the field of botany, with the aim of developing skills in species identification and the study of plant biodiversity.

Throughout the week at the CGT, participants will have the opportunity to consolidate and integrate the knowledge acquired in the different taxonomic groups through lectures, field excursions, laboratory activities and interdisciplinary discussions.

The programme will begin on Monday, 29 June, with an opening session followed by lectures focusing on the main diagnostic characteristics of vascular plants, bryophytes, fungi and lichens, together with an overview of online identification keys. The day will conclude with a welcome reception at the Centre for GeoTechnologies.

On Tuesday, 30 June, and Wednesday, 1 July, participants will take part in field excursions, followed by specimen identification sessions at the CGT.

On Thursday, 2 July, a full-day field excursion to the Pratomagno mountain range is scheduled, while on Friday, 3 July, the course will conclude with lectures on the management and use of data collected during the field activities.

Hosting the practical component of the Taxonomy School further reinforces the role of the Centre for GeoTechnologies as a venue for advanced training, scientific workshops and research initiatives that foster the integration of education, research and field-based activities.
